We are Troop 1719, a rising Brownie Girl Scout Troop located in Prince William County, at Westridge Elementary School.
Welcome and thank you for joining us!

Meetings

Our troop meetings are held right after school on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, from 4:00-5:30 pm. We do not meet during school holidays or if school closes due to inclement weather.  There may be times when meetings are held on alternative days/times to prepare for upcoming events.  Also, there will be times when meetings are cancelled due to emergencies and/or other reasons.  Advanced notification will be provided in the event of a meeting cancellation; and/or changes in days and times.

Activities

We are excited about the many activities our troop will do this year.  Parents will need to provide transportation for their child to and from scheduled troop events and activities, and/or inform the troop leaders if your child is in need of transportation to an event. Typical activities hosted by our Service Unit include the celebration of Juliette Gordon Low's birthday, a Cookie Rally, the Powderpuff Derby, World Thinking Day, a Mother-Daughter Tea, a Father-Daughter Dance, and of course, our cookie sales. We'll also have troop-specific events which will be decided on with our girls. Once dates are determined we'll add the events to our Event Calendar.

Financial Information

MEMBERSHIP DUES: Annual dues to be a Girl Scout are $25 for both girls and adults. Membership dues pay for accident insurance for members, program research, new resources, training, services to local councils and many other expenses. These dues are different from TROOP dues and are normally paid during registration.

TROOP DUES

:  Troop dues are $55.00 which covers membership pins, snacks, supplies, many badges and patches, and other items needed throughout the year.  A check for troop dues should be made payable to Troop 1719 and should be turned in with all necessary forms during one of the first meetings.

PROGRAM FEES: Nominal program fees are charged for council-wide events. Fees vary depending on the activity troops/girls select. In order to make Girl Scouting accessible to all girls, every effort is made to keep fees as low as possible.

Returned Checks: In order to cover the bank charge, any returned check will have a fee of $35.00.

Financial Assistance: Girl Scouting is for all girls, regardless of financial resources.  Financial assistance is available for those who can demonstrate a need for events, workshops, training courses, and camps. Please do not assume you can't participate due to money.  Come speak to us privately.

Uniforms and Handbooks

Girl Scouts are not required to wear uniforms (if wearing the GS pin you are considered in uniform);  but we encourage all the girls in our troop to purchase a vest or sash to wear to meetings and especially on outings.  When making your purchase, be sure to buy a size large enough to fit your daughter through her time as a Brownie.

You will need to purchase the following for the vest/sash:  Flag, Troop Numbers (1719), the Girl Scout Council Identification Set (Nation's Capital), Brownie Insignia Tab, and World Trefoil Pin.  The troop will purchase and award the Brownie Membership Pin and Girl Scout Stars during a special ceremony at one of our meetings. Items on the front of the vest include membership items or items the girls have earned. The items on the back include represent events or activities the girls participated in. To see where items should be placed, refer to the picture on the Resources Tab on our site.

It is not required, however you may find it useful to purchase a copy of the Brownies Handbook.  It can be helpful in the event that your child decides to work on awards that interest them on their own.  During our first few meetings of the year, we will work with the girls to set up a schedule framework for our time as Brownies and will let you know which awards aren't included in that schedule. For girls who decide to work on awards on their own, they will be provided a form to document their work. They will need to complete the form and speak to one of the troop leaders regarding the activity in order to fulfill the requirements for the badge.

Vests, sashes, patches, handbooks, and many other items can be purchased at the GS shop; a link is provided on the Resources Tab on our site.
