Hi! And welcome to Cub ScoutsPack 499!

We are so glad that you are interested in becoming a member of our pack. One of the most amazing things about our group is that everyone truly gets along, pitches in and does their part, and together we have built a great community for all of our boys to learn and grow into responsible young men.

All our den leaders and committee members have been working very hard over the summer to create an exciting and educational program for the 2014-2015 year.  Our monthly pack dues and funds that we earn from popcorn sales & other fundraisers go toward the projects at the den meetings, awards that your scout will earn, pack campouts, and fieldtrips.  Some of the events that we attend are the district campouts (held at Ah-ba-lu-fa camp grounds in Ft. Pierce) fishing, pinewood derby, the scout mega show and so much more! We also believe in giving back to the community. Different ways the Cub scouts can give back are by participating in the scouting for food drive, local beach or street clean ups, etc.

Scouting is a family oriented organization.  All members of our scout’s families are always invited and encouraged to attend events and support scouting. We believe that scouting can build stronger families.

So,welcome to scouting! It is going to be a great year at Pack 499 and we are glad that you have joined us!

Sincerely,

Pack 499

Pack499 Frequentlyasked questions?????

1. How much does Cub Scouts cost?

The registration fee is $10 & checks can be made out to Pack 499 due tonight. Monthly dues are $10.00 with the exception of the Oct. Dues which is $15.00. Dues are due by the 2nd den meeting of each month. You will need a handbook for your scout for the specific level which runs about $7.00 for their first meeting. Plus cost of the uniform, details below.

2. When & where do we meet?

All den meetings are at Saint Andrews  Lutheran Church, and are on Mondays from 6:45 pm-8pm. We also have Committee meetings (to plan what activities to do) will be anounced by commitee chair & our Pack meetings/award presentations are the Last Friday of each month(except Nov. & Dec. due to holidays).

3. What is expected of parents?

Parent participation is a must with all dens. At all pack/BSA activities Tigers must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18. Parent participation is strongly encouraged in the other dens as well. There will be projects at meetings your son will need your help with as well.

4. How much time is involved in Cub Scouting?

Den meetings are 1 hour per week & we also have extra activities planned throughout the month. You are strongly encouraged to attend the monthly pack meeting (about 1 ½-2hrs) as well since this is where all the boys receive their achievements for that month. These activities will take up as much time as your schedule allows. We do not have any requirements for our extra activities i.e.: camping, horseback riding, fishing, Scouting for Food, Christmas parade etc. but we encourage families to participate as much as possible to get the most out of the scouting experience.

5. Where can I get my uniform?

Uniforms can be purchased at Day Dreams Uniforms Inc,(see flyer for prices) 6911 Heritage Drive, PSL;  it’s near US-1 between PrimaVista and Kitterman Road, behind St. Lucie Battery and Tire – turn west off US-1 onto Williamsburg Way and left onto Heritage Drive.  Their hours are M-F 9:30 am-5:30 pm, Sat 9:30 am-5 pm.   There is also an official scout shop in Palm Beach Gardens (8335 North Military Trail) and a catalog 1-800-323-0732 or web site www.scoutstuff.org. The required Class A uniforms are the blue Cub Scout shirts (short or long sleeved).  For the Tigers, Wolf cubs, and Bears. I suggest you purchase things a little big since your Scout will wear this uniform  through the Bear rank (3rd grade), and optionally through Webelos (4th -5th grade).  The Webelos have the option to wear the Boy Scout khaki uniform.  For either shirt, you will also need to purchase the following patches (to be sewn on the uniform shirt): the “Gulf Stream Council” patch; pack numbers “4”, “9”, and “9”; and the World Crest patch.  We would like everyone to have their Class A uniform by the December Christmas Party at the latest.  We will also be ordering our class B pack tshirts which run @ $8 for kids (still need to verify prices for this year)& $10 for adults around the beginning of October. You will get more information about the class B shirts at our September pack meeting.

Please don’t hesitate to ask us anything we may have not covered. Thank You    Pack 499

What are all these things I keep hearing about?????

Below you will find a list of events that we have every year with Cub Scouts and a brief description of that event and what is basically expected from our volunteers.

Den meetings are for your specific level of scouting. The boys in your den meet and participate in meeting pre-set requirements set by the Boy Scouts of America. The meetings are run by your den leaders.

Pack meetings are for all dens & are the Last Friday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Awards are handed out to recognize your scout’s achievements for the month as well as to receive information about the events that follow. Volunteers are needed to assist with set up and clean up. Please have the boys wear their class A uniform.

Committee meetings will be announced as soon as possible. It is where we decided on what activities/ projects to do. Anyone interested in helping plan events is encouraged to attend.

Round table meetings are planned monthly as well and will be announced by committee chair. These are set up to share with other packs ideas and plans we have made for our pack. It is a time we find out about Gulf Stream Council activities also. All leaders/ parents are welcomed as well to attend.

Popcorn Sale: This event is important to raise the needed monies for pack as well as Gulf Stream Council activities. We sell popcorn at booths as well as each boy sells popcorn individually to raise money for our pack as well as the Council. This is our main fundraising activity so the more we sell the more fun things we can do. J  Volunteers are needed to organize popcorn for distribution, and computing sales and prizes.

Christmas Party:  In Early to mid Dec. we have a pack Christmas party instead of a regular pack meeting. There will be no awards given this month. There will be activities & games for the boys & siblings to do. We also would like each family to bring a dish for a potluck dinner. Food sign ups will be available at your weekly den meeting starting in late Nov. Volunteers are needed to plan activities and organize food as well as set up and clean up.

Christmas Parade:  We participate in the Port St. Lucie festival of lights Parade and would like to enter a float for the scouts to ride on. We need volunteers to organize as well help make the float.

Blue and Gold Banquet: This is a yearly party to celebrate scouting and share in family fun. This gathering is unique to only Cub Scouting. There is usually a theme that allows us all to dress up in costume or attire to coincide with the given theme. This is the one event that requires the most volunteers. The food is prepared and provided by the pack. From past experience, the more hands willing and able to assist the less taxing it is, and the more fun it is for everyone involved. The theme will be announced at a later date. We try to plan games for all the kids as well as make it an impromptu fundraiser with raffle of baskets of goodies as well as bidding on items donated. We also take this time to acknowledge and thank those outside organizations as well as people who have donated time and/or money to our pack. This is a huge undertaking and we must have volunteers to make it a success.

Cub Family Weekend: Gulf Stream Council plans another 2-night 3-day campout. This is very much like the fall campout as it follows the same ideas and planed activities.

Pinewood Derby: This is a tradition in Cub Scouting and there is plenty of help to be had with assisting your scout in making his car. The basic requirements for the car can be found in the box the car comes in. Hints are available through the Internet in amounts you cannot imagine as well as from other scout families. In the past we have had assistance with cutting out the cars as well as test and tune. This is intended to be a parent/scout project. Again, volunteers are needed to organize awards for the boys as wellas snacks, set up as well as clean up. And volunteers are needed to assist the boys who may need extra help with making their cars.

Crossover/Advancement Ceremony: This is a very important time for each scout and it is imperative that they come in their full uniform and crossover to the next level in scouting.  Tiger to Wolf, Wolf to Bear, and Bear to Webelos. This is held at our last pack meeting in May & it does end up being a long meeting due to the size of our pack & our desire to acknowledge each scout.

This year we are going to add an event that has not been done on the treasure coast. To find out our surprise join our pack and enjoy the program that we have set for the year.
