Welcome to Troop 5!
The Troop has many years of tradition in the Petoskey community and is one of the most respected and active in the Scenic Trails Council. We trace our lineage back to the 1930's, and have successfully helped dozens of Scout's reach their destination on the "Trail to Eagle"!
Our normal meetings are scheduled every Monday night from 7:00 p.m to 8:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church on Mitchell St. In addition, most months we have camping trips in tents or cabins at various locations. Our Troop has tented, hiked, and kayaked the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, gone skiing at Searchmont, Ontario, scuba diving in the Bahamas, fly-fishing on the Au-Sauble River, canoed the Jordan River, and backpacked in the Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. Our High Adventure crews have explored, by foot, boat, and canoe, places such as Philmont High Adventure Base in New Mexico, Sea Base in Florida, and Northern Tier Canoe Camp in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota. If these are the types of activities that sound exciting or that your Scout enjoys, you are in the right place!!
When a new Scout registers with Troop 5, he may begin attending our Troop meetings and campouts. Our intention is to make the new Scout's introduction to Boy Scouts as pleasant as possible. We will assign him a more experienced Scout as a guide and mentor, and he will be welcomed into his Patrol right away.
The Troop is run by Troop Committee, and Committee meetings are held once a monthly with locations announced monthly via e-mail. The actual dates of the meetings are printed on our Troop Calendar of Events. We encourage parent participation at these meetings or in other capacities that suit the individual's particular talents. All of the leaders are volunteers, and many have their own boys in the Troop. The success of the Troop rests with the positive energy of the boys, and the tireless efforts of the parents. We don’t worry too much about the boys holding up their end of the bargain!
If we can be any help, please contact Ken Mainland, Scoutmaster 231/330-4667; or via email: kenmainland@gmail.com
